Welcome to Italy- Cultural Briefing and Helpful Advice

Italy, the famous “boot-shaped” peninsula lies in Central Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Mediterranean sea to the south and bordered by Austria, France, Slovenia and Switzerland to the North.

Italy has a population of approximately 59 million inhabitants and is made up of 20 regions with the principal cities being Rome, Milan and Naples. Italians often have stronger ties to their region than to the country of Italy with strong rivalries between the North, Central and Southern regions.

The Italian economy ranks sixth largest of the OECD countries; its economic strength coming from the success of small and medium-sized companies which are often family-owned and managed and concentrated in industrial clusters throughout the country. There is a thriving culture of artisan workers. GDP is derived from services (65%), of which tourism is a major contributor, Industry (32%) with a small contribution coming from agriculture (3%).

In Italy everyone must carry an official document at all times e.g. Passport, ID card or Permesso di Soggornio. Car drivers are required to carry a valid driving licence when driving a car. Failure to produce one if stopped by police will likely result in a fine. Car lights (dipped) should be on when driving on motorways and major roads during daytime.

Apart from International companies and within the tourism industry, knowledge of English language is patchy. Italian people are mainly very friendly and helpful so even a basic understanding of the language will help you a great deal.

Help and support for the individual comes mainly from the family, circle of friends and trusted acquaintances rather than from State run organisations. Families often live very near to each other (even in the same building). As a newcomer to Italy it can take awhile to enter into this group of trusted people. Once a member though you will be treated as “one of the family!”
